I had two Mothers - two Mothers I claim

Two different people, yet with the same name.

Two separate women, diverse by design,

But I loved them both because they were mine.

The first was the Mother who carried me here,

As I got older, she somehow younger grew,

And we'd laugh as just Mothers and daughters should do.

But then came the time that her mind clouded so,

And I sensed that the Mother I knew would soon go.

Analysis of the Poem

1. Paraphrase

The poet says she had two mothers. Both were the same person, but they were very different in behavior and nature. The first mother was the one who gave her birth, raised her, and loved her deeply. The daughter inherited her looks and habits from this mother.

As time passed, her mother became older and her mind became weak. The daughter felt that her real mother was slowly disappearing. The same body remained, but her personality changed—she became like a little child again.

Now the daughter had to take care of her mother just as her mother once took care of her. Life had come full circle. The poet wishes that her children will do the same for her when she grows old — to love both versions of their mother, the strong one and the weak one, just as she loved her two mothers.

The poem is about the cycle of life, love, and change between a mother and her daughter.

It shows that as parents grow old, they may lose memory and become like children again. Then it becomes the child’s turn to take care of the parent. The poem teaches us to love our parents in every stage of life — both when they are strong and when they are weak.

এই কবিতায় কবি জোয়ান স্নো ডানকানসন জীবনের এক গভীর সত্যকে তুলে ধরেছেন — মা ও সন্তানের ভালোবাসা কখনও শেষ হয় না, শুধু রূপ বদলায়।

কবির বক্তব্য, তাঁর জীবনে ছিল দুইজন মা — কিন্তু বাস্তবে সেই দুইজন এক মানুষ। প্রথম মা হলেন সেই যিনি তাঁকে জন্ম দিয়েছেন, ভালোবাসা ও যত্নে মানুষ করেছেন, জীবনের পথ দেখিয়েছেন। এই মা ছিলেন শক্ত, আত্মবিশ্বাসী, স্নেহময়ী এবং শিক্ষাদাত্রী।
